Authenticity is paramount in our business and is conducted in multiple steps throughout our operations. We only work with a network of sources that are trustworthy and the long-lasting partnership helps to decrease the likelihood that we ever receive inauthentic items. However, that alone is not sufficient to eliminate the occurrence of fakes, even if provided by accident.
When an item makes it into our warehouse, our expert authenticators, with as many as 13 years of experience, get to work confirming all features of the item to ensure its authenticity. Everything from the leather and fabric materials to the hardware and their sheen, to the logos and prints, to the stitching, colors, shapes, stampings, and serial numbers are thoroughly and carefully reviewed to assure the authenticity of each item.
In this article, we will have a look at a few of the things we look at when we authenticate a Classic Chanel Double Flap chain shoulder bag, as it serves as an excellent example showcasing the finest craftsmanship of luxury items.
1. materials
At Preluve our dedication to authenticity is not just a promise but a rigorous practice embedded in our process. As we embark on the journey of ensuring only genuine items make their way into your hands, our team starts by meticulously inspecting the exterior of each product. Material choices vary by brand but quality should always be consistent. We believe that authenticity lies in the details, and so our experts scrutinize every item, ensuring flawless finishes free from any color blotches or uneven dyeing.

When looking at the Chanel double flap, perfection is the standard for both stitching and lining, leaving no space for irregularities. The iconic matelassé diamond shapes, a symbol of Chanel's excellence, with approximately 9 to 11 precisely aligned stitches adorning each distinctive pattern.
2. Hardware
Next in our authentication process is the examination of the hardware on our items. Designer bags use the finest materials, featuring high-quality, substantial, and durable components. In contrast, imitations often compromise by employing cheaper hardware. Our meticulous inspection covers every detail, including chains, logo plates, and zippers, ensuring that each element upholds the standard of excellence synonymous with genuine designer pieces.

Chanel bags use different types of zippers, including Lampo, DMC and YKK, depending on the bag in question. The hardware should be consistent in both logos and chains. In the logo of our example Classic Chanel Double Flap bag, the right C should overlap the left C at the top, and the left C should overlap the right C at the bottom. When opening the outer flap of the bag, the backside of the lock consists of a back plate attached by flathead screws, alongside a clear font with even spacing.
3. Interior
In our pursuit of authenticity, examination of the bag's interior is crucial. The lining, a hallmark of quality, is scrutinized for flawlessness, ensuring a consistent color throughout. Our authentication process delves into various indicators within the bag's interior, such as zips, stitching, brand stamps, and more. It is in these finer details that the true authenticity of each item reveals itself.

Authenticating a Chanel Double Flap bag involves meticulous attention to detail. The logo is perfectly stitched, the serial number inside matches the number on the guarantee card. Codes vary by production period: 6 digits (1984-1986), 7 digits (1986-2004), and 8 digits (2005 onwards).
Since 2021, Chanel uses a metal plate with an 8-digit alphanumeric code and an embedded microchip instead of a serial sticker. This plate, matching the bag's hardware. The microchip stores the bag's life cycle details, ensuring thorough verification from creation to distribution, purchase, and any subsequent repairs.
4. accessories
Bags often come with several accessories that play a crucial role in authentication. However, it's common for these accessories to be lost or retained by original owners when reselling their bags. These include dust bags, boxes, authenticity and guarantee cards, the original receipt, and smaller items like mirrors or secondary bags. Retaining these accessories not only streamlines the authentication process but also enhances the overall value of the item.
